Clashes kill 25 in Syria, fighting spreads to Lebanon

The violence in Syria spread to neighbouring Lebanon on Sunday, where four people were killed in clashes between supporters of President Bashar al-Assad and opponents, security officials said.

In Syria at least 25 people were killed Sunday, mostly civilians, according to activists, as rebels fought security forces.

Another 10 people were injured in the Lebanese port city of Tripoli when clashes broke out between residents of the Jabal Mohsen neighbourhood, mainly populated by Alawites, and rivals from the Sunni Muslim-dominated district of Bab al-Tabbaneh, said witnesses.

Al-Assad is a member of the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.
