Homs: The devastating aftermath of the heavy shelling of the city, P2, P3
Summary of Events
The Assad regime continued to violate Annan’s peace plan agreement as
security forces opened heavy fire in the villages of Hayalin and Twaina
and the city of Hama in the province of Hama, raided homes in the cities
of Boukamal and Quriya in the province of Deir Azzour under the cover
of heavy fire, opened heavy machinegun fire in the towns of Heraytan,
Indan, and Atareb in the province of Aleppo, and raided the Damascus
suburbs of Harasta and Zabadani amid heavy shooting.
The international community expressed great fear of Syria slipping into a
civil war. ICRC Director said that fighting was so fierce in many areas
such as Homs and Idlib that it could be labelled as a civil war. UN
secretary general Ban Ki Moon said that the UN is working on averting a
real civil war in Syria which would lead to the fall of multitudes of
victims, while Annan announced that he will not allow Syria to slip into
civil war and that his peace plan is the final resort.
Assad’s forces killed at least 26; eight of them fell in Idlib as regime
forces shelled the towns of Ariha and Habit and randomly opened heavy
fire in the towns of Khan Sheikhoun and Maaret Noman, seven in Homs as
the Syrian army shelled the neighbourhoods of Qosur and Khaldiya, the
cities of Qasir and Rastan, and the towns of Talbiseh and Tal Kalakh,
and four in Daraa as regime forces opened heavy fire in Daraa Mahatta
and the town of Tesil. Regime forces also set fire to the farms in the
town of Alma, and kidnapped three children in the city of Daraa.
Peaceful demonstration movements continued to organize communities
throughout the country, as students demonstrated at universities in
Raqa, Qalamoun, and Latakia, triggering regime forces to shut the arts
and humanities department in Raqa, deploy heavily in Qalamoun, and
arrest several students in Latakia.
