#LCC STATEMENT ON #HOULA MASSACRE

In an indication of a loss of self-control, the criminal, fascist Syrian regime deployed its forces and armed militias (Shabiha) to commit a new massacre today, killing innocent Syrian civilians in the town of Houla in the Homs suburbs. As of this writing, 88 people have been martyred, most of them women and children.

This barbaric act was preceded by the regime’s mortar shelling in the town. The campaign ended when the armed militias slaughtered entire families in cold blood.

The regime's crisis has reached a peak and it has finally employed “Samson’s Option” in a last-ditch attempt to ignite sectarianism, both inside and outside Syria, before the regime completely collapses. This nihilistic plan aims to nullify any attempt by the international community to reach a political solution, and shows a complete disregard for Mr. Annan's plan. Rather, the regime has used this time to cover up its increasing, systematic oppression to put an end to the Revolution.
We in the Local Coordination Committees are pained by the international community’s apparent blindness to the bloodshed, and believe the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) bears the responsibility for its inability to protect Syrian civilians. We request that the UNSC now take a step forward and more forcefully express its position with regard to the regime’s practices.

Amid our pain and shock, we offer our deepest condolences to the Syrian people and urge them to please exercise restraint and to avoid a civil war, for which the regime has been pushing for months. We also appeal to those who do not have blood on their hands – officers and regular Syrian soldiers alike – to consider their national duty and join the ranks of their own people who are rebelling against the regime.

We call on our people, the patient Syrian people, to declare a three-day mourning period and to observe a one-day strike starting the morning of Saturday, May 26, 2012.

Mercy upon the martyrs of the Revolution of Freedom and Dignity
Freedom for our detainees
Long live a free, proud Syria
